A disposable vape is a self-contained nicotine delivery device: e-liquid tank, coil, battery, mouthpiece. There is no refilling, no coil replacement, no wattage adjustment. When it's empty, it goes in a bin (which is another problem — see below).

Inside the device

  • Tank — 2 mL (EU/UK cap) to 13+ mL of e-liquid, usually at 5% (50 mg/mL) nicotine salt in the US.
  • Mesh coil — a thin metal mesh that heats a larger surface area than the old cotton-wick coils. More aerosol per puff, more nicotine per puff.
  • Battery — increasingly USB-C rechargeable in the 5000+ puff formats.
  • Mouthpiece — moulded plastic, often shaped for a tight draw.

The dose

At 5% strength, roughly 1.5-2 mg of nicotine per puff. A 5000-puff device holds ~250 mg of loaded nicotine — the equivalent of over 300 cigarettes' worth. See how much nicotine is in a vape for full comparisons.

Real absorbed dose is lower than "loaded" dose because not every puff is fully absorbed. But the pattern that matters is total daily throughput: a daily disposable user typically outstrips a pack-a-day smoker in total nicotine.

Why disposables won

  • Cheap up-front. $10-20 at the counter vs $30+ for a pod system and pods.
  • Sweet flavours. Fruit, dessert, candy, and menthol variants — the FDA denied these for pod brands but disposables ignored authorisation entirely.
  • Convenience. No charging (originally), no refilling, no coil swaps.
  • Discretion. Small, colourful, don't look like tobacco products to non-users.
  • Stronger hit. Mesh coils produce more vapour per puff.

The regulation lag

In the US, the FDA has denied virtually every non-tobacco disposable submitted for a Premarket Tobacco Application. Federal enforcement has been inconsistent; state and local jurisdictions have escalated in 2024-2026.

In the UK (June 2025) and France (2025) single-use disposables are banned outright. Manufacturers pivoted to "refillable" pod kits that look almost identical.

The environmental cost

Each disposable contains a lithium-ion battery, plastic housing, and residual e-liquid. Estimates suggest 260 million disposable vapes were thrown away in the UK alone in 2023. Lithium in landfill is a fire hazard; the plastic is not commonly recycled.
