Juul is the product that changed vaping. Before Juul, e-cigarettes were harsh, low-nicotine "cig-alikes" mostly used by adult smokers trying to switch. Juul's 2015 launch — a USB-sized pod device delivering nicotine salt at 59 mg/mL — collapsed the age of first use and drove the teen vaping surge that made "Juuling" a verb.

How it works

A Juul is two parts: a rechargeable battery in a matte-metal body about the size of a USB stick, and a snap-in "pod" cartridge holding 0.7 mL of e-liquid. Drawing on the mouthpiece triggers the coil; there is no button, no wattage, no adjustment.

The nicotine dose

A standard 5% pod contains ~40 mg of nicotine. Puff-for-puff absorbed dose depends on inhalation depth, but daily users typically finish one pod a day — roughly the nicotine intake of a pack-a-day smoker. See how much nicotine is in a vape for full comparison.

The trick that made it work is nicotine salt chemistry. Freebase nicotine at 59 mg/mL is unusable — it burns the throat. Protonating nicotine with benzoic acid drops the pH and makes 5% strength inhalable, delivering cigarette-level nicotine without the throat hit that had capped earlier devices at 1-2%.

Why it hooked teens

  • Discrete: looked like a USB drive, no smoke, no smell.
  • Sweet flavours (mango, mint, crème brûlée) at launch.
  • Cigarette-strength dose in a device school administrators didn't recognise.
  • Rapid dependence: many teens moved from "trying it at a party" to daily use inside a month.

Where things stand

  • Flavours: Only tobacco and menthol are legally sold in the US after the FDA's 2022 marketing denial (later reinstated for tobacco/menthol under a court-supervised settlement).
  • Youth use: Juul's market share among teens has collapsed since 2020 — replaced by disposables like Elf Bar, which are cheaper and offer illegal fruit flavours.
  • Adult switching: Juul still has FDA-authorised marketing for its tobacco/menthol pods in the US.

If you're quitting a Juul

A daily pod habit is a real nicotine dependence — treat it like quitting cigarettes, not "just a vape." See quitting Juul as a teen and the NRT guide for what dose actually matches a pod-a-day habit.
