"Free" covers a lot of ground in app stores. Some quit-vaping apps are free the way a public health service is free. Others are free the way a trial is free. Here is the honest split.
Disclosure: PuffPause makes a quit-vaping app. We have tried to describe the alternatives the way we would want them described.
Genuinely free, no paid tier
These are funded by public health bodies or non-profits. There is no upsell.
- This is Quitting (Truth Initiative, US), free text-based program built specifically for vaping, tested in randomised research. Text DITCHVAPE to 88709.
- NHS Quit Smoking app (UK), free daily tracking, savings counter, and craving support. Covers vaping.
- National and state quitlines, free phone coaching, and in many US states free nicotine replacement therapy posted to you.
If cost is the deciding factor, start here. These are the strongest free options and they are not trying to sell you anything.
Commercial apps with a free tier
Most quit apps, PuffPause included, give away the core loop and charge for the layer on top.
Typically free:
- Days-quit counter and streaks
- Money-saved and puffs-avoided estimates
- Craving logging
- Basic guided breathing
Typically paid:
- A personalised taper schedule based on your real usage
- Coaching, human or AI
- Trigger analytics, which times, places, and moods drive your cravings
- Data export
What actually predicts success
Across the research, the features that correlate with quitting are unglamorous:
- Something to do in the craving. Paced breathing, a timer, a distraction.
- A visible streak. Loss aversion is a real behavioural lever.
- A record of triggers. You cannot plan around a pattern you have not noticed.
- Contact that continues past week one. Most relapse happens after the app novelty wears off.
Everything else is presentation.
The honest limitation
No app delivers nicotine. If you are a heavy user, a disposable every day or two, or 20mg/ml salts multiple times daily, an app plus nicotine replacement therapy will beat an app alone by a wide margin. Patches and gum are available over the counter, and free from many quitlines.
Before you install
Check two things:
- What the app does with your data. Craving logs are health data. Look for a plain-language privacy policy.
- Whether it works offline. Cravings do not wait for signal.
