The breathing screen is the most-used feature in most quit apps, PuffPause included. It is worth being precise about what it does.

What paced breathing does physiologically

Slow breathing with an exhale longer than the inhale shifts the balance of the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic activity. Practically:

  • Heart rate falls slightly on each long exhale
  • Subjective arousal, the "I need to do something now" feeling, drops
  • Attention narrows onto a countable task instead of the craving

The important part is the exhale. Deep, fast inhaling does the opposite; it raises arousal. Four seconds in, six to eight out is the working ratio.

Why timing matters

A nicotine craving is a curve, not a state. It climbs, peaks around minute three, and falls. Almost nobody vapes at minute eight, they vape at minute two, at the top.

Breathing produces a measurable effect inside 60–90 seconds, which lands exactly in that window. That timing, not depth of relaxation, is why it works.

What the app adds

Doing this from memory sounds easy and mostly fails, for three reasons:

  1. Pace drift. Under stress people speed up and lose the long exhale.
  2. Early exit. Without a timer, most people stop at 30–40 seconds, before the peak has passed.
  3. Idle hands. Vaping trains a hand-to-mouth loop. Holding a phone that is visibly counting occupies it.

A good breathing screen is therefore mostly about constraint: one tap from lock screen, a fixed pace, and a duration it will not let you cut short.

Where it stops working

Be honest about the ceiling:

  • It does not deliver nicotine. Physical dependence is untouched.
  • Around 20mg/ml salt users, breathing alone is usually not enough for the first week, nicotine replacement therapy plus breathing is a much better pairing.
  • It does nothing about the cue. If your 3pm craving is driven by a 3pm meeting, you need to change the meeting habit too.

How to use it well

  • Use it at the first sign of a craving, not after five minutes of resisting.
  • Complete the full cycle even if the craving fades early, the point is training the response.
  • Use it once daily when you are calm. Skills practised only in emergencies get used badly in emergencies.
