IQOS ("I Quit Ordinary Smoking", a marketing name) is a heat-not-burn tobacco product from Philip Morris. It heats tobacco sticks instead of burning them. It is a real category and gets confused with vaping constantly.
What is different from vaping
- What is heated. Tobacco (IQOS) vs e-liquid (vape).
- Temperature. ~350 C (IQOS) vs ~200 C (vape coil).
- Emissions. IQOS produces an aerosol with tobacco-specific nitrosamines and other tobacco compounds; vape aerosol contains none of those.
- Nicotine curve. IQOS is closer to a cigarette than a Juul: quick delivery, familiar hit.
Risk framing
Both products avoid combustion, which is where most cigarette harm comes from. But they are not the same:
- Vaping removes tobacco entirely; risks are aerosol/flavouring-related and largely unknown long-term.
- IQOS keeps tobacco in the picture; some tobacco-specific harms carry over, just at lower levels.
For a smoker, either is a substantial step down. For a vaper, IQOS is a lateral or worse move because it reintroduces tobacco.
Cost and flexibility
IQOS requires a proprietary device (~$70-100) and single-use HeatSticks priced close to cigarettes. Vapes range from disposables ($8-15) to refillables ($20-30 device + $10-15 pods/liquid). See disposable vs refillable and the true cost of vaping.
Cessation
Neither is an approved cessation aid. If quitting is the goal, use NRT, varenicline/Chantix, bupropion, or a quitline.
