Zyn is a brand of nicotine pouch, not a vape. It is the dominant US pouch brand, which is why the comparison to vaping gets asked so often.

What Zyn actually is

A small tobacco-leaf-free pouch containing pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, flavour, and plant fibre. You park it under the lip. Nicotine crosses the gum into the bloodstream. Sold in 3 mg and 6 mg strengths in the US.

Head-to-head

Vape (Juul-class) Zyn (6 mg)
Route Lungs Gum
Time to peak ~10 seconds 20-30 minutes
Absorbed per session ~1-3 mg per pod session ~1.5-3 mg per pouch
Peak curve Sharp spike Broad plateau
Primary risk site Airways, cardiovascular Mouth, gums

The peak-curve difference is why vapes feel more compulsive and why Zyn is easier to space out.

Is it a legitimate step down from vaping?

For someone who cannot stop nicotine outright, yes, Zyn is defensibly less harmful than continuing to vape, mostly because it removes lung exposure. That is harm reduction, not cessation.

Two conditions turn it from a swap into progress:

  1. A taper plan. 6 mg to 3 mg over a few weeks, then stop.
  2. A stop date for the pouches themselves, not "I'll switch and see".

Without those, Zyn is just a different way to stay dependent.

When Zyn is the wrong choice

  • You never used nicotine before. Skip both.
  • You have gum disease or recent dental surgery.
  • You want to actually quit nicotine, use approved cessation aids instead.
