Every US school district and every UK secondary school has a vaping policy. Most are punitive (warning, detention, suspension). None of the punishment models has been shown to reduce use. What does reduce use is confidential access to cessation support inside the school.

What most policies say

  • Warning for first offence.
  • Detention or in-school suspension for second.
  • Out-of-school suspension for third or for possession.
  • Confiscation of devices in all cases.
  • Parental notification at various trigger points.

Some districts add a mandatory cessation programme in place of suspension (see below).

Why zero tolerance backfires

  • Suspensions remove students from the environment (school) that supports cessation and drop them into the environment (home / peers) that often does not.
  • Confidence in the school as a support resource collapses after a punitive response, so future disclosures do not happen.
  • Meta-analyses of school substance use interventions consistently find punitive-only approaches do not reduce use.

What works instead

INDEPTH (American Lung Association): a self-paced alternative-to-suspension programme available to US schools. Combines education with a cessation pathway.

School nurses and counsellors: confidential in most US states for students under state minor consent laws. Can connect students to This Is Quitting, pediatricians, and NRT-friendly clinics.

Confidential peer programmes: some schools run structured peer-support groups; effect sizes are modest but consistent.

If you've been caught

  1. Ask for a cessation pathway rather than consequences. Many schools have this option and don't advertise it.
  2. Ask about confidentiality with the school nurse. Rules vary by state and age.
  3. Enrol in This Is Quitting yourself (text DITCHVAPE to 88709). It does not require school involvement.
  4. Use the incident as your quit date. External pressure that lines up with a planned quit is one of the strongest predictors of follow-through.
  5. Have the conversation with parents on your terms; the talking to parents guide covers the script.
